В эту минуту в бар попадает бомба и полностью разрушает его.► Несмотря на банальный сюжет и беднейшую хореографию, этот незначительный мюзикл, следующий в карьере Риты Хейуорт сразу же после знаменитой Девушки с обложки, Cover Girl, содержит как минимум один оригинальный элемент: обстановку эпохи ( Лондон в период бомбежек), которая, хоть и раскрыта без всякого реализма, тем не менее придает фильму некоторый исторический драматизм, непривычный для жанра. Авторы фильма поступают последовательно, трагически завершая сюжет для 2 из 4 главных героев, за что, кстати, их в свое время упрекали. Лубич, занятый на других проектах, в этот момент был недоступен. Мамулян не нашел в сценарном департаменте «Paramount» материала по своему вкусу. Однако он познакомился с французским либреттистом Леопольдом Маршаном, который подсказал ему тему для фильма. Затем Маршан приступил к работе над партитурой с Роджерзом и Хартом, и только после этого был написан сценарий. Этот необычный метод работы привел к очень успешному результату: весьма продуманному, элегантному и легкому мюзиклу. Это не только картина, удивительно зрело использующая звук (пришедший в кино лишь 3 годами ранее), но и, по единодушному (в кои-то веки) мнению историков, - шедевр жанра в американском кино 30-х гг. Изобретательность и изящество фильма рождены воображением и волей упрямого эстета Мамуляна. Многие сцены достойны отдельного упоминания: Париж просыпается на рассвете под симфонию звуков (звон инструментов, домохозяйки, выбивающие ковры и т. д.), и Мамулян с метрономом в руке развивает идею, лишь частично заявленную им в театральной постановке «Порги и Бесс»; знаменитая сцена, песня «Разве не романтично?» перелетает из уст в уста; и музыкальный номер «Бедный апаш», когда силуэт героя Шевалье падает тенью на роскошную декорацию замка. Операторская работа неизменно восхитительна, особенно в эпизоде псовой охоты, в финале которого появляется спящий олень. Шевалье хочет покормить оленя с руки и просит всадников тихо удалиться, чтобы не спугнуть животное. Они так и делают, в замедленной съемке: копыта лошадей едва касаются земли. Это почти так же красиво и смешно, как сцена с усыпленным быком в фильме Маккэри Парнишки из Испании, The Kid from Spain, 1932, вышедшем на экраны в том же году. Даже не приходится сожалеть, что в фильме не танцуют: умелое совершенство монтажа и очаровательная элегантность актеров оставляют стойкое впечатление, будто сюжет развивается, подчиняясь легкой и воздушной хореографии. Если так уж необходимо в чем-нибудь упрекнуть Мамуляна, сформулировать этот упрек можно так: зритель больше восхищается ловкостью, изобретательностью, постоянными находками режиссера, нежели с интересом следит за действием и персонажами.
